I will explain the two most common configurations for phase selection which are frequently used in the industries.Â
1. SINGLE POLE THREE WAYS: The term single pole signifies that it will be used for single-phase applications, and three-way means a three-way rotary switch allows the user to select from three different input power supplies.
If a power cut occurs in the first phase, then you must rotate the switch to any of the adjacent second or third phases that have the power supply. Internally as shown in the above two images, The specific shape of the cam forces certain contacts to open and others to close. This re-routes the electrical flow from the different input to an output load.Â
The switch has several stopping points (detents) which correspond to different output connections. These detents ensure the switch stays in a specific position once selected.
